London Parks Guide

Hyde Park covers approximately 142 hectares in central London, with lawns, trees, flower gardens and the Serpentine lake. Its royal history began when Henry VIII acquired the land for hunting, while public access followed in the 17th century. Today, a walk beside the water offers a break from the surrounding streets. Swimming is limited to the designated Serpentine Lido, and boating depends on seasonal operations. Winter skating is associated with particular seasonal events, rather than being an everyday park facility.

Families can look for play areas, while sports facilities and the park’s historic riding routes provide other ways to spend time outdoors. Concerts and major events take place on scheduled dates and may require tickets. Speakers’ Corner is the famous place associated with public debate and free speech. For a quieter stop, choose a lakeside café or refreshment point, checking its opening hours before making it part of your walk.

Victoria Park lies in East London and opened in 1845 as a public green space for the East End. Its lawns, lakes, paths and mature landscape make it a place to walk, meet friends or spend time with children. Regent’s Canal and the Hertford Union Canal help define the surrounding area and can be incorporated into a longer walk. The park has play and sports facilities and hosts a programme of community activities and larger events. Check current notices for children’s activities, organised sport and festival dates rather than expecting the same programme every day. Some events can also affect access to particular parts of the park.

Lincoln’s Inn Fields is a historic garden square in the Holborn area, beside the legal district and the nearby Lincoln’s Inn. Its setting reflects the development of this part of London from the seventeenth century onwards. The lawns and paths provide space for a break from the surrounding streets, while tennis courts can also be used for netball under the council’s booking arrangements. Check court availability and park opening hours if you plan to play.
