Cathedral of the Nativity and Holy Royal Martyrs, Chiswick
Cathedral of the Nativity of the Mother of God and the Holy Royal Martyrs
The parish traces its history to the Russian Orthodox community established in London in 1725. Its story predates the present cathedral building by many generations.
The congregation worshipped at different London addresses before finding its permanent home in Chiswick.
An important step towards the present cathedral came in 1989, when the parish had to leave its premises at Emperor’s Gate and sought a new site.
Land on Harvard Road in Chiswick was purchased in 1990, providing a location for a purpose-built church.
The property included an existing house. Plans developed for a new cathedral in the Russian Orthodox architectural tradition.
The foundation stone was laid in 1997 and the cathedral opened in 1999. Its Great Consecration took place in 2018, when the upper church, formerly dedicated to the Dormition, was rededicated to the Nativity of the Mother of God. This explains the older Dormition name still found in references to the building.
The parish also runs a Saturday school.
The school serves children aged 6 to 16. Contact the parish for its current programme, admission arrangements and term dates.
