Tower Bridge tour

Beside the Tower of London, Tower Bridge spans the Thames with a silhouette recognised around the world. Its river setting makes it a rewarding place to walk, take photographs and look back towards the fortress or along the waterfront. Londoners and visitors share the pavements, while the riverside paths offer different angles on its towers. A visit can be a simple stop on a wider route or a chance to explore the bridge’s history and engineering inside.

The bridge combines suspension spans with opening bascules that allow vessels to pass. That working structure is an important part of its appeal: behind the ornate stonework is an ambitious piece of Victorian engineering.

The towers are connected by high-level walkways, giving the bridge its distinctive outline. In 1977, it was repainted in red, white and blue for Queen Elizabeth II’s Silver Jubilee, replacing its earlier brown appearance. Looking closely at the towers and spans reveals how the decorative design frames the machinery beneath it.

The high-level walkways closed to the public in 1910 and reopened in 1982 as part of the visitor attraction. Today, their views and glass floors are highlights of a ticketed visit. Displays in the towers explain how the bridge was designed, built and operated.

The Victorian Engine Rooms form part of the usual visitor route and explain the original machinery that powered the bridge lifts. They are a historic exhibition, separate from the operational control room. Check the current ticket route and opening arrangements when planning your visit; access to working control areas is not included as a general visitor promise.
