About Harwich Port
Harwich is a busy English port with an established passenger trade. Historical figures for 2013 record 56 cruise ship visits, illustrating the role of transfers for visitors. It is roughly 120 kilometres from London, on the North Sea coast in northern Essex, with a deep-water harbour.
Harwich’s historic port community traces its medieval roots to 1238. Centuries later, it was considered as a landing point for William of Orange, but unfavourable winds in November 1688 led to a different plan. Daniel Defoe visited in 1722 and was so impressed by the size of the harbour that he described it in his travel writing. The Royal Navy was also once based here.
The town and port suffered badly in the flooding of 1953, one of the most serious floods in British history. They have long since recovered, including their road links, making private transfers to and from Harwich straightforward.
Harwich continues to receive international ships, with a regular passenger connection to Hook of Holland in the Netherlands. The former passenger service to Esbjerg in Denmark has ended. Travellers arriving by sea can arrange a transfer for their onward journey.
The traditional phrase “Harwich for the Continent” reflects the port’s role as a gateway to Europe. A private car can take you from the port to London or to other destinations across the country.
