Cathedral of the Dormition and All Saints, Knightsbridge

The Cathedral of the Dormition and All Saints

The cathedral occupies the former Anglican church of All Saints in Ennismore Gardens. Designed by Lewis Vulliamy, the building dates from 1848–49. Later alterations included remodelling of the west front in 1891–92.

The Russian Orthodox parish moved into the building in 1956. It continues to serve as an Orthodox cathedral and is distinct from the Russian Orthodox cathedral in Chiswick.

With support from parishioners, the church purchased the building in 1978. Its interior was adapted for Orthodox worship while retaining the character of the earlier church.

Icons painted by pupils of the iconographer Leonid Ouspensky became part of the cathedral’s interior, alongside works created at different stages of the parish’s history.

The cathedral belongs to the Diocese of Sourozh of the Moscow Patriarchate. Its present identity should not be confused with other Orthodox jurisdictions or congregations in London.

A later restoration programme culminated in the cathedral’s consecration in 2016. Check the parish’s current information when planning a visit or attending a service.

Services use Church Slavonic and English, reflecting a congregation drawn from different backgrounds. Consult the current service calendar for the language and time of a particular service.
