About The Langham

On 10 June 1865, a grand reception marked the opening of The Langham in London, celebrated for its scale and modern facilities. The Prince of Wales, the future King Edward VII, attended.

The hotel embraced the technology and style of its time. Its amenities included hot and cold water from an artesian well, flushing toilets and baths in the rooms. It was an early adopter of innovations such as air conditioning and hydraulic lifts, known as “rising rooms”, rather than simply a place to sleep. Guests also had access to a post office, transport ticket offices, clubs, restaurants and shops.

Historical accounts describe electric lighting at the hotel in 1879 and, by 1890, the installation of 20 telephone lines, an impressive provision for the period. Persian carpets added to an atmosphere intended to appeal to royal tastes, and a long list of distinguished visitors reflects that ambition. The French emperor Louis Napoleon III spent part of his exile at The Langham. The Ethiopian emperor Haile Selassie’s exile from 1936 to 1941 was associated chiefly with Fairfield House in Bath, rather than continuous residence at this hotel.

The hotel’s visitors have included the Duke of Edinburgh, Winston Churchill, Charles de Gaulle, John Major, Diana, Princess of Wales, and many others. Writers Somerset Maugham, Mark Twain and Arthur Conan Doyle have also stayed at The Langham. A refurbishment programme was under way in 2006. Its central location places guests near Regent’s Park for a walk and some fresh air, with bars, restaurants, theatres and exhibitions within reach. Families should ask whether extra beds for children are available free of charge under their room’s terms. Breakfast and drinks in the room, dry cleaning, ironing and complimentary internet should likewise be confirmed against the hotel’s current service and room policies. Oxford Circus Underground station is around 5 minutes away on foot. Artesian remains one of the hotel’s dining and drinking venues. The former Roux at the Landau restaurant, remembered for its decorative interiors with Eastern influences and views towards the church, is a historical name; check the hotel’s current restaurant arrangements when planning a meal.
