About Hotel Café Royal
Hotel Café Royal stands on Regent Street near Piccadilly Circus, where the character of Mayfair, the energy of Soho and the elegance of St James’s meet. Theatres, shops, restaurants and business addresses are close at hand, making the location useful for both leisure visits and work in central London.
The Café Royal name has been part of London life for more than 150 years. The historic café welcomed figures such as Oscar Wilde, Muhammad Ali, Winston Churchill and David Bowie. Today’s hotel represents a later chapter: David Chipperfield’s architectural conversion and Albert Adrià’s dining concept connect that heritage with contemporary hospitality.
In 1863, French wine merchant Daniel Nicolas Thévenon and his wife Célestine arrived in England after financial difficulties in Paris. Their new beginning led to the creation of the original Café Royal, a venue that became a London institution long before its transformation into the present hotel.
Food, wine and conversation have long been central to Café Royal’s appeal. The historic Regent Street venue brought poets, politicians and other public figures together around its tables. Oscar Wilde was associated with its celebrated wine culture, while accounts of Winston Churchill’s visits recall steak, Stilton and champagne.
People with very different views could find common ground over a meal here. That culinary tradition continues at the hotel today with Albert Adrià’s Cakes & Bubbles, where desserts and sparkling wines offer a distinctive reason to stop on Regent Street.
