Getting Around London

London’s transport network offers several ways to explore, from familiar red double-decker buses to suburban rail and river services. The Underground, usually called the Tube, is the world’s oldest underground railway. Its usefulness lies in the breadth of the network and its connections with other modes: choose the Tube route that suits your destination and check any service changes before travelling.

Buses are a useful way to see the streets between attractions while making an ordinary journey. Routes such as the 9 and 15 pass through interesting parts of central London, but no single service covers every landmark. Check the current route, stops and TfL fare before boarding.

For destinations beyond central London, suburban trains can be a practical choice. River services offer a different perspective on the Thames, with connections including Blackfriars, Canary Wharf and Woolwich Arsenal. Check the operator’s timetable and stopping pattern, since a sightseeing cruise and a scheduled river-bus journey are different products.
